The Langtang Valley Trek is a 10-day trek in Nepal that includes 6 days of trekking, 2 days of scenic driving, and 2 nights in Kathmandu. The route follows the Langtang Khola through Langtang National Park, passing forests, rivers, waterfalls, and traditional Tamang villages before reaching Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m). From here, you can hike to Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m) or the higher Tserko Ri (4,984 m) for wide views of the Langtang Himal.
Many trekkers compare the Langtang Valley Trek with Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp. If you want Himalayan scenery without flying to Lukla or spending several weeks on the trail, Langtang is a practical option. The landscape changes as dense forests give way to open alpine valleys, glaciers appear above the valley, and snow-covered peaks come into view.
The trek begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi. From there, the trail climbs through Lama Hotel and Langtang Village before reaching Kyanjin Gompa. Along the way, you cross suspension bridges, follow the Langtang Khola, pass waterfalls and steep cliffs, and walk through yak pastures as the valley gradually opens.
As the highest overnight stop, Kyanjin Gompa is worth spending an extra day exploring. You can walk around the village, hike to Kyanjin Ri, or continue to Tserko Ri, the highest viewpoint on the trek. From these viewpoints, you can see Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Gangchempo, and the surrounding glaciers before returning to Kyanjin Gompa.
The valley also has a strong Tamang heritage. Stone-built villages, Buddhist monasteries, prayer wheels, mani walls, and yak farms remain part of daily life, adding a cultural side to the trek alongside the mountain scenery.
Most days involve 5 to 7 hours of walking, while the hike to Tserko Ri is usually the longest and most demanding. The trek is better suited to a steady pace than rushing from one stop to the next. You have time to walk through the villages, stop at family-run teahouses, and watch the landscape change from subtropical forest to a high Himalayan valley.

Keep a steady pace on the trail, especially above Langtang Village and on the climb to Kyanjin Gompa. If the weather is clear, use your extra day at Kyanjin for Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri. Nights can be cold at higher elevations, so carry warm layers and a good sleeping bag. Regular walking before the trek will make the longer uphill sections easier.

Choose the Langtang Valley Trek if you want about a week of walking on a route that combines mountain villages, forest trails, and higher mountain country. You can also add Kyanjin Ri or Tserko Ri for a harder day.
The Langtang Valley Trek is worth choosing because the landscape changes as you walk deeper into the valley. The lower hills gradually give way to the open mountain valley, and the trail gets quieter as you move farther from the road. You have time to stop in villages, meet local people, and walk at your own pace without trying to cover too much each day.
Reach Syabrubesi at 1,550 m by a 6–8 hours' drive from Kathmandu, without taking a domestic flight.
Spend time at Kyanjin Gompa at 3,870 m, with Langtang Lirung and other high peaks rising around the valley
Walk through Tamang villages and visit Buddhist monasteries, with stone houses, prayer flags, and mani walls along the trail.
Follow the Langtang Khola through bamboo, rhododendron, oak, and pine forests, with waterfalls and mountain streams beside the trail.
I first walked the Langtang trails as a porter in 1996 and have returned many times as a guide. I know the route, villages, lodges, and harder sections firsthand. With Mountain World Treks, you trek with local guides who know Langtang from years of experience.

Yes. The Langtang Valley Trek suits trekkers looking for a first Himalayan trek close to Kathmandu without spending more than a week on the trail. You should be comfortable walking uphill and downhill for several hours a day and staying in simple teahouses.
It is a good choice if you prefer forest paths, small mountain villages, and a quieter trail. With regular walking practice and a steady pace, most fit trekkers can manage it. See our Langtang Valley Trek Beginner Guide for more details.
