But why did the river rise so suddenly?

The Flood Did Not Start With Heavy Rain in Rasuwa. This is one of the most important facts about today’s flood.

There was no heavy rainfall in Rasuwa that could explain the size of the flood. Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology reported only limited rainfall in the district during the previous 24 hours.

Meteorologists, therefore, started looking upstream for the source of the water. The water came into Nepal from the Tibet side, entering the Bhote Koshi River near the border.

A Glacial Lake in Tibet Is the Likely Source

The latest information points to a supraglacial lake in Tibet that suddenly drained.

A supraglacial lake is a lake of meltwater that forms on or around a glacier. These lakes can hold a very large amount of water. If the ice or material holding the water fails, the lake can drain very quickly.

That water then travels downstream as a powerful flood. Satellite-based observations reported today indicate that a supraglacial lake in the Tibetan region drained before the flood reached Rasuwa. International reporting has also linked today’s flood to this sudden lake drainage.

Nepal’s hydrology authorities are investigating the event and have also said that a glacial lake outburst is suspected.

Did an Earthquake Cause It?

There are reports and social-media claims saying that an earthquake caused the lake to burst.

There is no confirmed evidence of this at the time of writing. An earthquake can sometimes affect glaciers, ice dams, or mountain slopes, but that does not mean an earthquake caused today’s event.

Until authorities or scientific investigations confirm the cause, we should not present the earthquake claim as fact.

What we know is simpler:

A large amount of water suddenly came from the Tibet side, entered the Bhote Koshi River, and caused today’s flood. A draining supraglacial lake is currently the leading explanation.

The exact reason why the lake drained is still being investigated.

Timure Was Hit First

Timure is close to the Rasuwagadhi border crossing between Nepal and China. The sudden rise of the Bhote Koshi caused serious damage around the area.

Buildings and other infrastructure were affected, and roads and bridges were damaged.

Security personnel in the area were also affected, with a number of people initially reported missing or out of contact. Rescue teams are working to find people and assess the damage.

Because communication and road access have been affected, the number of casualties and missing people is still changing.

Syabrubesi Is Also Affected

Syabrubesi is another important area affected by the flood. It is also the main roadhead for the Langtang Valley Trek, which makes today’s news especially important for trekkers.

The flood does not mean that the entire Langtang Valley has been destroyed. The immediate concern is the road and river corridor leading to Syabrubesi, including possible damage to bridges and sections of the road.

Until local authorities and trekking agencies have checked the route, travellers should not assume that the road is safe.

What About Langtang Trek?

If you are planning a Langtang trek soon, check the road condition before travelling from Kathmandu.

The trekking trail itself is not the same thing as the road to Syabrubesi. A flood can damage the access road without affecting the entire trekking route. At the moment, however, the situation is too fresh to give a simple “open” or “closed” answer for the whole Langtang region.

The road, bridge, and trail conditions need to be checked first. For anyone already in Rasuwa, the advice is clear: stay away from the river and follow local authorities’ instructions.

The Flood Is Moving Downstream

The water did not stop at Rasuwa.

The flood moved into the wider Trishuli River system, creating concern for communities farther downstream.

Warnings have been issued for areas including Nuwakot and Dhading, with people living close to the river advised to move away from the riverbank.

This is important because a sudden upstream flood can continue to create dangerous conditions many kilometers away from where it started.

Rescue Work Is Underway

The Nepal Army, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Police are involved in the rescue operation. Helicopters and medical teams have been sent toward the affected areas where possible.

Rescue work is difficult because some roads and bridges have been damaged, and some locations are difficult to reach.

Authorities are continuing to search for missing people and assess damage to homes, roads, bridges, and hydropower projects.

What Should Travellers Do?

If you are travelling to Rasuwa or planning a Langtang trek in the next few days, do not rely on old road information.

Today’s flood can change the condition of the road and bridges very quickly. Before leaving Kathmandu:

• Check the latest road condition.
• Ask your trekking agency or guide for current information.
• Follow instructions from local authorities.
• Do not travel toward damaged areas just to see the flood.
• Stay away from rivers and riverbanks.
• Be prepared to change your travel date if access is not safe.

• Is Langtang affected? Access through Syabrubesi may be affected, but it is too early to say that the entire Langtang trekking route is damaged.
