Lukla Airport, officially Tenzing-Hillary Airport, is the main airport for trekkers flying to Everest Base Camp and other destinations in the Khumbu region. This Lukla Flight and Airport Guide covers the airport, flight options, runway, weather, and practical details you should know before flying to Lukla.
The airport is at 2,860 metres (9,383 feet) in Solukhumbu. Its runway is only 527 metres long and has a steep uphill gradient. Small STOL aircraft and helicopters are used because of the short runway and mountain terrain.
For most trekkers, a Lukla flight marks the start of the Everest trek. The flight itself is short, but it needs some planning. Mountain weather can change quickly, and during busy trekking seasons, flights may operate from Manthali Airport in Ramechhap instead of Kathmandu.

Where Is Lukla Airport?
Lukla Airport is in Lukla, Solukhumbu District, in the Khumbu region of eastern Nepal. The airport sits above the Dudh Koshi valley and is close to Lukla Bazaar.
It is the usual starting point for the classic Everest Base Camp route. After landing, trekkers normally walk towards Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche and eventually Everest Base Camp.
Flying to Lukla saves several days of walking from lower parts of Nepal.
Tenzing-Hillary Airport
The official name of Lukla Airport is Tenzing-Hillary Airport. It was named after Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary, who made the first confirmed ascent of Mount Everest in 1953.
Most trekkers and local people simply call it Lukla Airport. The airport began operating in 1971 and has become an important transport point for the Khumbu region.
It serves small fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters because the airport has a short mountain runway.
How Do You Get to Lukla?
There are three main ways to reach Lukla:
- Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla
- Drive from Kathmandu to Manthali Airport in Ramechhap and fly to Lukla
- Take a helicopter to Lukla
The departure airport depends on the season, airline arrangements and current flight operations. During busy trekking periods, Lukla flights commonly operate from Manthali Airport in Ramechhap rather than Kathmandu.
Always check your ticket carefully because the departure airport can change.
Kathmandu to Lukla Flight
When direct flights are operating, Kathmandu to Lukla is the easiest option because there is no road transfer before the flight.
The flight normally takes about 25 to 35 minutes and is usually scheduled in the morning. The actual departure time can change because of weather, air traffic, aircraft availability, and other operational conditions.
If your ticket is from Kathmandu, you normally check in at Tribhuvan International Airport before flying to Lukla.
Ramechhap to Lukla Flight
During busy trekking seasons, many Lukla flights operate from Manthali Airport in Ramechhap.
If your ticket shows Ramechhap, Manthali, or RHP, you need to travel by road from Kathmandu to Manthali before taking the flight to Lukla.
